Cinco de Mayo, Tequila, Tex-Mex & Chelada?

Feliz Cinco de Mayo! Here's to fine Tequila, Tex-Mex and Clamato!! I just got back from a suburban Cinco de Mayo experience at Chevy's in Solana Beach. At first, I wasn't happy about only having a chain Mexican restaurant close to my place. A far cry from me back in the Porto de Angeles (Port of Angels), Oaxaca, Mexico. (picture above; me drinking a "Chelada", a Corona, Clamato and a lime. Deliciuos on a hot, dry day.) I'm very picky about my authentic Mexican cuisine, but on this Cinco de Mayo, I wanted to be crawling distance from my place. It was better than I thought it would be, with $2 Tequila shots, $2 Tecate Light tall-boys and $4 Chicken Nachos Grande, Yum!!

Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of tequila and Tex-Mex, the actions are similar to the day of Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day (plenty of drinking) and has become very popular in the United States. But how many people really know the story behind this celebration of spring?

  • Contrary to what some may believe, it is Independence Day in Mexico.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla, during which Mexican troops defeated the French army in a weak victory as a symbol of national unity. Mexico celebrates Independence Day on September 16, but Cinco de Mayo is observed only at regional level.

Mexican Americans in the southwestern states like New Mexico and California have brought north of the border this annual celebration. Since then it has become very commercialized and bars have reaped the benefits. Not so much a holiday as a holiday cash cow for the alcohol business – shown in part by the launch of Bud Light "Chelada" in 2008.

So heres to a Mexican fiesta with an anti-imperialist message and nonetheless be a reason for Americans to beer up and tequila overdose every spring. Salud!
